In today’s economy it is already hard enough for most people to live a comfortable life without sacrificing a lot of things. The crunch is felt by everyone and so much more so by people who are trying to make a few repairs to their homes. No one wants to sacrifice the durability of a roof for a low price.
Although re-roofing might seem like a simple enough job, it is not as easy as it looks or sounds. Re-roofing is one of the most expensive home repairs you could ever have. To make the process less complicated, it is a must to pick up a copy of your city’s local re-roofing regulations. You want to be sure that you are everything correctly and that you are not violating any laws.
For most homeowners the issue is how to install a new roof without breaking the bank. So, how is it done? Here are a few tips to take note of.
Step 1. Selecting the right roofing company
There are plenty of roofing companies today. The list can go on and on but one thing which you should always keep in mind is to choose a company that has a long history of successful roof installations. Experts say that you should interview at least three before you make a final choice. Check for complaints and be wary of companies which have a lot of dissatisfied customers. If you choose the right roofing company, you need not waste money because you won’t have to do it all over again.
Take advantage of the off seasons
For roofing to be completed, good weather is a must. Most contractors are quite busy during the warmer months because it is the time when they can perform their jobs without rain or snow getting in the way. This is also the time when roofing is at its most expensive. You will have room to negotiate the price when you begin your roofing project at the end of winter or during the beginning of spring. You have to be flexible with your work schedules so you can save a significant amount of money.
Consider long-term savings
For your roofing expenses to be a bit more palatable, you should factor in long-term savings. Choosing durable but long lasting materials might cost you a lot of money but you won’t have to change them for a long time. Imagine all the savings you will be able to make when you invest in shingles, for instance. Likewise, energy-rated products are a bit more expensive than those which are not but they can cut your utility bill considerably.
Be ready to do the work yourself
One of the easiest ways to save money s by doing the work yourself. However, you should always remember to only d this if you have experience and knowledge. Trying to save money by doing the work yourself without a clue will end up costing you more in the long run. Although installation will require roofing skills, demolition is something which most people can handle by themselv

Hot summer months can be very uncomfortable and it can also mean high energy bills trying to cool the whole family. The heat absorbed by a traditional roof during sunny days can easily raise the temperature inside the house. This contributes to discomfort especially if there is no air conditioning. Fortunately today, there are low cost remedies that will help cool the home and it is called a cool roof.
What is a cool roof?
What indeed is a cool roof? It is a roof which is designed to maintain a lower surface temperature compared to a traditional roof. Loosely, the term cool roof is used to describe any roofing surface which is cooler that your standard rooftop. So, how do you turn your roof into a cool roof?
Modified bitumen roof
One of the most common options for a cool roof is a low-sloped roof or a modified bitumen roof. Traditional bitumen roofs are gray or black and ha ea low solar reflectance. On the other hand, the modified bitumen roof is a membrane made up of sheets of rubberized or plasticized asphalt which are held together reinforcing fabric. There is a very slight difference in price between the two varieties of bitumen roof.
Single ply membrane
The single ply membrane is also another option. Single ply membrane are pre-fabricated vinyl or plastic sheets which have solar reflective coatings or materials. These sheets are rolled onto the deck and then attached to the structure. Some of the most common single ply membranes are ethylene propylene and polyvinyl chloride.
Built-up roofing is synonymous to the standard tar and gravel roof. It has a lot of advantages because it is easy to apply, easy to repair and inexpensive. Traditionally the asphalt and gravel used are dark in colour so that they can trap more heat and light than they release.
Cool roof coatings
You will have the best results when cool roof coatings are applied to low-sloped roofs which are still in very good condition. There are two types of coatings and they are elastomeric coating and cementitious coating. Elastomeric coatings contain polymers so they are less brittle and are more adhesive to surfaces. On the other hand, cementitious coatings contain ceramic particles or concrete. Both varieties of cool roof coatings improve the solar reflectance of the roof’s surface.
Cool roof coatings are sprayed, rolled and then brushed onto existing low-sloping or flat rooftop. They create a bright white surface which resembles that of paint. Both coatings are most commonly used for re-roofing projects.
Your choice of roofing cannot only affect the potential future value of your home; it can also affect the well-being of your family. Roofs which are made of flimsy materials will not last long and will not be able to protect your family and your property should there be extreme weather such as hurricanes.
Roofing decisions such as cooling your roof can also make your home a more comfortable place to stay in especially during months when the heat is almost unbearable.
